History

The history of the Aix-Marseille-Provence region began almost 3,000 years ago with the Greeks, who founded the city of Massalia (Marseille), which quickly became a strategic trading center in the Mediterranean. In 125 B.C., the Romans established Aix-en-Provence and boosted trade via the port of Fos-sur-Mer.
Over the centuries, major events led to population movements that left their mark on the area. At the end of the 19th century, Marseille became an immigration crossroads, attracting people from Italy, Spain, Armenia, North Africa and Africa.
This diversity has shaped the city’s cosmopolitan and dynamic identity.

General Economy

Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis is France’s largest in terms of surface area, covering 3,148 km², four times the size of Greater Paris. Home to over 2 million inhabitants, it is experiencing rapid growth and offers a particularly attractive talent pool.
Ideally located in the Mediterranean basin, it benefits from a strategic positionning open to Africa and Europe, and excellent transport infrastructures: the Port of Marseille, France’s leading port for the exchange of goods, and 2nd in the Mediterranean, Aix-Marseille Airport, France’s 2nd largest regional airport, and two TGV fast track train stations.
Aix-Marseille Provence is also rich by nature and landscape, with 71% operating as protected agricultural and natural spaces and 155 km of coastline, such as the Parc national des Calanques or the Montagne Sainte-Victoire.
Today, Aix-Marseille Provence is the 1st economic hub in the South of France.
The economy of the region is structured around six areas of excellence:

  • Health
  • Aeronautics and Mechanics
  • Marine activities and Logistics
  • Digital and microelectronic industries
  • Energy and Environmental Services

Tech and Startups

Aix-Marseille-Provence hosts over 860 startups, 60% of which are incubated and hosted within a particularly rich and dense ecosystem, including key players such as Accélérateur M, Marseille Innovation, the Arbois technology park and the Eurobiomed cluster.
As a unique space for entrepreneurial creativity, encounters and enrichment in the Aix-Marseille area, CISAM is the fruit of the intelligence and ambitions shared by the largest French-speaking university, Aix-Marseille Université, Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis and two multinationals: CMA CGM and the L’OCCITANE Group. Sharing the same desire to develop scientific culture and innovation in the service of economic growth, these partners have grouped together on a single site all the resources needed to stimulate innovative approaches and facilitate their progression. CISAM is a meeting place, a place to create, incubate and accelerate projects, and a place to serve all those involved in innovation in the Aix-Marseille region.
The region also stands out for its commitment to ecological transition, quality of life and social innovation. It was elected European Innovation Capital (iCapital 2022-2023), underlining its efforts to transform the diversity that characterizes its territory into a driving force for innovation and successful transition to a sustainable development model.

Five thematic competencies were chosen by La Synapse in Aix-Marseille-Provence.

France’s 2nd-largest center for medical research, Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis, thanks to an ecosystem focused on innovation and healthtech, is positioning itself as a pioneer in the medicine of the future.
Its expertise in oncology, immunology, rare diseases, infectiology, medical instrumentation and neurosciences is recognized worldwide. In recognition of this expertise, the Marseille Immunology Biocluster (MIB) project is a world-class biocluster. It was the winner of the national “Bioclusters” call for projects launched as part of France 2030, with a State investment of €97 million. It brings together major players in research & training, healthcare, innovation and industrial applications, and aims to accelerate the development of new immunotherapy antibodies for incurable or severely debilitating diseases. Around 40 immunology startups will be set up by 2030, with the support of the Eurobiomed competitiveness cluster, the SATT du Sud-Est, the Impulse incubator and international venture capital and investment funds.
In addition, Aix-Marseille-Provence ranks 3rd worldwide for R&D in biotechnology.
It is France’s no. 1 clinical trials center after Paris, and no. 1 cancer cluster after Paris. The region hosts a top-notch research and innovation ecosystem, including the Eurobiomed healthtech cluster, the Grand Luminy biotech incubator, the Impulse inter-university incubator and the MI-mAbs (Marseille Immunopôle monoclonal antibodies) R&D platform dedicated to treatments for cancer and inflammatory diseases. Finally, the Timone hospital in Marseille is home to the 7 Tesla clinical MRI platform, the only one of its kind in France, for advanced magnetic resonance research.
Aix-Marseille-Provence region, hosts the world’s 4th-largest technology park for environmental technologies – the Technopôle de l’Arbois – and is a center for innovations in the fields of renewable energies, nuclear power, water and environmental management, sustainable construction, waste treatment and green chemistry. The region is home to the Capenergies competitiveness cluster and two clusters: Novachim and EA ECOENTREPRISES. The Cadarache cluster (CEA, ITER, Cité des énergies, En’Durance Énergies) is particularly noteworthy: it hosts research facilities and skills unique in the world, including the Jules Horowitz reactor and ITER, a device designed to create decarbonized energy. The port zone of Fos-sur-Mer, strategic in France for the petrochemical industry, is one of the largest industrial port zones in Europe. It is home to major steel, energy and petrochemical companies (ArcelorMittal, Ascométal, KEM One, Air Liquide…), 2 LNG terminals, 2 wind farms and 2 refineries. 30 million euros have been invested in the electrification of regional ports, including Marseille-Fos, to reduce air pollution. Finally, the PIICTO collective, which fosters synergies between industrial players and supports the SYRIUS low-carbon industrial zone project, is a real turning point for climate change and decarbonization of industrial port areas.
Driven by its main player, Airbus Helicopters, the aeronautics and mechanical engineering sector benefits from a dynamic environment conducive to innovation.
Thanks to the presence of the SAFE national competitiveness cluster and a number of science and technology parks, the industry is a recognized center of excellence in the region.
The region hosts three sites dedicated to the aeronautics and mechanical engineering sector:
